The Dune Lamp: A Sculptural 3D Printed Lamp Shaped by Wind and Sand
Dune is a sphere of light with a surface of sand. Ripples meander around it and fold back on themselves, or a desert of dunes grows across it, shaped by the wind over the years. In our Studio you choose the pattern, set the wind and watch the sand move, then print the lamp on your own 3D printer. This guide covers how Dune is made, how to design your own, and what it takes to print it.

What is the Dune lamp?
A sculptural table lamp by Leora: a sphere of light with a rippled surface, designed in your browser and printed on your own 3D printer.
In our Studio, Dune's surface is grown in one of two ways. Ripples meander around the sphere, fold into hairpins and turn into rays near its top and foot. Dunes come from a desert: sand hops with the wind, slides where it grows too steep and gathers into dunes, which the Studio lays around the lamp like a map around a globe.
As the Studio opens it, Dune is 169 mm across and 152 mm tall. The rippled shell and the foot print together as one piece, with the foot hidden inside the shell, and a separate LED housing locks into it. Lit by Bambu Lab's LED Lamp Kit 001, the whole sphere glows, and the ripples draw lines of light and shade across it.
What are Ripples and Dunes?
The lamp's two patterns: Ripples, bands that meander around the sphere, and Dunes, a desert grown by the wind.
Ripples sets how many bands run from the top of the lamp to its foot, how deep they stand, how much they wander and fold, how large their meanders are and how far they twist around the lamp. A Flow step then sets their direction, from rings around the lamp to spirals or lines from top to foot, and the shape of each ripple: Dune, Wave, Ridge or Terrace.
Dunes grows a desert on the lamp. One wind builds crescent dunes, or ridges across its path; two winds build long ridges between them; winds from all round build star-shaped dunes. Sand sets how much there is, Height the tallest a dune may stand, and Time moves the desert on, from freshly levelled sand to a hundred years, while fine wind ripples cross the dunes.
What sets Dune apart?
A surface that grows, a project ready for your printer, and light that becomes part of the design.
You choose how Dune's surface grows, guide it with a brush and pick its colours, and you see every change in three dimensions before anything is printed.
- A form of your own. Shuffle makes a new pattern from the same settings, and every brush stroke stays on the lamp, so the Dune you print can be yours alone.
- A desert in motion. In Dunes, the sand moves on screen as the years pass, and you stop it where the dunes look right.
- Light through a fine wall. The wall is 1.2 mm thick as the Studio opens it, so the whole sphere glows and the ripples cast lines of shade.
- Ready to print. The download is a 3MF project for Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer with the settings, supports, plates and colours in place, along with STL files for any other slicer and 3D printing instructions.
- Made to print cleanly. Lift shapes the lamp to need fewer supports, and at full Lift it needs almost none.
- Every lamp in the Studio. The Plus plan includes every lamp in the Studio and every model in our 3D assets library.
- Yours to keep. The lamps you download remain yours to print for personal use.
Leora's lamps have been exhibited at Dutch Design Week 2025 in Eindhoven and in the Light Selection of Venice Design Week 2026.
How do you design a Dune lamp?
Open the Studio, choose Dune and move through its steps: Pattern, Flow, Shape, Draw, Overhang and Colour. Flow belongs to Ripples.
- Pattern chooses Ripples or Dunes. Ripples has Ripples (how many), Depth, Wander, Scale and Twist. Dunes has Wind, From, Between, Sand, Height, Wind ripples and Time.
- Flow, for Ripples, sets their Direction, their Profile, how far they Lean, their Roughness and Evolve, which moves the pattern on a little at a time.
- Shape sets the lamp's Size, from 150 to 200 mm across, and its Thickness, from 1.2 to 2.4 mm: a thicker wall is stronger and lets less light through. Add logo raises your logo on the top of the lamp.
- Draw reshapes the surface with a brush: Stir pulls the ripples along like a finger drawn through sand, Smooth straightens their meanders, Twirl winds them around the brush and Swell makes them taller or flatter. Your strokes stay when you change the other steps.
- Overhang shows in red what would need support, sets your slicer's support angle (Limit) and Lift, which shapes the lamp to need fewer supports.
- Colour picks the material, the look and its colours: Strata, Crests, Stripes or One colour.
When you're ready, download it: choose your printer's bed and, if you like, STL files as well.
Can you print the Dune lamp in more than one colour?
Yes. Its colour looks are Strata, Crests and Stripes, each with its own presets, and One colour.
Strata gives each ripple the next colour, all the way up the lamp; on Dunes, the colours lie in layers by height, like bands of sand. Crests gives the top of every ripple a second colour. Stripes runs bands of colour up the lamp, and the printer changes spool once at each line. Presets include Canyon, Agate and Ember for Strata, Desert, Gilded and Snowdrift for Crests, and Saturn, Eclipse and Twilight for Stripes. The lamp opens in One colour.
Strata and Crests change colour many times within each layer, so on a printer with a single nozzle they take longer and use more filament. Stripes changes colour only where a band begins, and One colour prints from a single spool on any printer. Printers that give each colour its own nozzle or toolhead, such as Bambu Lab's H2C, change colour in seconds. A lamp of up to four colours fits one AMS.
Does the Dune lamp need supports?
Very little, and Lift takes it close to none: the top stays round and is shaped inside to print on its own, and the ripples soften where they would overhang.
The Overhang step shows in red what would need support at your slicer's support angle, and how much of the lamp that is. As the Studio opens it, with Lift at 75% and a 20° limit, 2.5% of the lamp needs support. With Lift all the way up, the Studio shows almost no supports, and Bambu Studio lays none at that limit.
Supports are switched on in the project, as tree supports, at your Limit.
What light does the Dune lamp give?
A warm, even glow: the LED shines through the fine wall of the whole sphere, and the ripples draw lines of light and shade across it.
Dune is made for Bambu Lab's LED Lamp Kit 001: a 5 V, 3 W warm white LED module on a 1.5 m USB cable, which plugs into a 5 V USB power adapter. The LED sits in the lamp's own housing in the foot, and the cable leaves through a small tunnel in the wall.
Older versions of Leora's lamp designs use the Posaluce base from Creative Cables, and an option to use the lamps with Creative Cables' SnakeBis cord set is coming soon.
A thicker wall, set in Shape, lets less light through; light colours and translucent materials let the most through.
What does it cost to make a Dune lamp?

What do you need to make a Dune lamp?
A 3D printer with a 0.4 mm nozzle, the material of your choice, and Bambu Lab's LED lamp kit with a 5 V USB power adapter.
- A 3D printer with a 0.4 mm nozzle and a bed large enough for the lamp: 169 × 169 × 152 mm as the Studio opens it.
- Material in your lamp's colours: about 200 g for the lamp the Studio opens with. Every colour in the Studio is a Bambu Lab spool; other brands and materials work too, though print quality, fit and the way light comes through can vary.
- For more than one colour: a printer that changes filament or tools on its own, such as one with an AMS or with several toolheads, and the 3MF project, which carries the colours.
- The Bambu Lab LED Lamp Kit 001 and a certified 5 V USB power adapter.
Can you sell the Dune lamps you print?
Yes, with the Pro plan and its commercial license.
Pro ($299 a year) includes a license to 3D print and sell lamps worldwide, along with high-resolution product photos, discounts on CE-certified lamp components and priority support.
Where do you start?
In the Studio, where designing is free: open it, choose Dune and make it your own.
You can view your lamp from every side and see its size and how much of it needs support before you pay. Downloading Dune is part of the Plus and Pro plans, and our Starter lamp downloads free if you'd like to print a Leora design first.
The Studio designs other lamps too: read about the Gravity lamp, and how to make a Coral lamp and a Growth lamp.
Frequently asked questions about the Dune lamp
Is the Dune lamp worth it?
For anyone with a 3D printer who wants a lamp of real design character, yes. Dune is a sculptural lamp by Leora that you design yourself in the Studio and print on your own 3D printer: its surface grows as ripples or as dunes shaped by the wind, and it downloads as a print-ready project with every setting in place. Designing it is free, and the download is part of the Plus plan, $99 a year for every lamp in the Studio.
What is the difference between Ripples and Dunes?
Ripples are bands that meander around the lamp and fold back on themselves, with a Flow step for their direction and profile. Dunes are grown by a simulation of wind and sand: crescents, ridges or star-shaped dunes, depending on the wind, with fine wind ripples over them.
How big is the Dune lamp?
The lamp the Studio opens with is 169 × 169 × 152 mm. Size, in the Shape step, sets it from 150 to 200 mm across.
How long does the Dune lamp take to print?
With a 0.4 mm nozzle, about 22 hours for the lamp as the Studio opens it, plus about an hour for the LED housing, in Bambu Studio's estimate for a Bambu Lab A1. In Dunes, about 14 hours.
How much material does the Dune lamp use?
About 200 g for the lamp the Studio opens with, in one colour: about 180 g for the lamp, supports included, and about 20 g for its LED housing.
What light does the Dune lamp use?
Bambu Lab's LED Lamp Kit 001, a 5 V, 3 W warm white LED module on a USB cable. It sits in the lamp's own housing in the foot and gives a warm, even glow through the whole sphere.
Which plan do I need to download the Dune lamp?
Plus ($99 a year) or Pro ($299 a year). Both include every lamp in the Studio. Designing it in the Studio is free.
Can I print the Dune lamp on a Bambu Lab A1 mini?
Yes, in one colour and up to Size 179: choose the A1 mini's 180 × 180 mm bed when you download. For more than one colour, choose a printer with a larger bed.
Does the Dune lamp need supports?
Very few: as the Studio opens it, 2.5% of the lamp needs support at a 20° limit, and with Lift all the way up it needs almost none.
Can I print the Dune lamp in several colours?
Yes, in its colour looks: Strata, Crests, Stripes and One colour. More than one colour needs a printer that changes filament or tools on its own, such as one with an AMS, and the 3MF project.
Can I add my logo to the Dune lamp?
Yes. Add logo, in the Shape step, raises your logo on the top of the lamp, from 24 to 50 mm across, in the lamp's colour or its own. A PNG with a clear background works best.
Can I download the Dune lamp as an STL or 3MF file?
Yes. The download is a 3MF project for Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer. For any other slicer, turn on Also include STL files when you download, and copy the main settings from this guide. Colours come with the 3MF project.
Can I sell the Dune lamps I print?
Yes, with the Pro plan and its commercial license. Plus is for personal use.
Do I keep my lamps if my plan ends?
Yes. The lamps you have downloaded remain yours to print for personal use, so keep your files.
